Creating a dashboard

< Previous                                                                                            Next >

The Overview page is the default 'dashboard'.  It is not very user friendly, but it is very useful, so we should leave it alone.  Instead I created a new 'dashboard' just for what I wanted.

Go to Configuration -> Lovelace Dashboards. Here you can see all defined dashboards and create new ones. Lovelace is the "UI" for home assistant.  Engineers love to use abbreviations, "UI" is an abbreviation for 'User Interface'.

Select  and enter a title.  I used "Door Controls".  You can also set an icon using any icon from https://cdn.materialdesignicons.com/3.2.89/.  Just prefix it with "mdi:"

Once you create it, select it in sidebar.

In the upper right, select the three vertical dots
and select "Edit Dashboard"
In the screen that comes up,  change the "Start with empty dashboard" to 'on' and select "Take Control"

Select the
In the view configuration, enter the title, the icon ("mdi:" prefix like above) and leave the rest as default.

Select 'SAVE'
Select
Select "BY ENTITY"

Find the Door, and select the checkbox next to it.

Select "Continue"
Select "ADD TO LOVELACE UI" on the suggestion.
We now have a simple dashboard, just for locking the door.
You can select the Overview dashboard in the sidebar, then select 'Door Controls' again.  The dashboard will then be out of 'edit' mode.

On a Mobile Device

If you have a phone, you should look at your Home Assistant on it at this point.

On an iPhone you can go to http://homeassistant.local:8123/, but on Android, you will need to figure out your IP address and use that.  This sucks, and has been a problem for many years...well, maybe someday Google will see the light.  Your address will look something like this - http://192.168.0.68:8123/ (the 'IP' is the 192.168.0.68 part.  The 'Port' is 8123)

Log in using the username and password you created when you initially set up Home Assistant.

Select the in the upper left to change dashboards

Select the "Door Controls...

You can see the simple 'card' to use to lock or unlock the door

If you tap the card, the door will unlock (remember it may take a moment), then the card will change to reflect that the door is now unlocked.

Next we will work on adding a card so that we can set the codes on the door.
